Georgia Region Championships
2007
We all got together for the final trial of the year in these parts. You could feel the heat coming just around the corner; the daffodils were up all over the hills- a testimony to the old shacks and tenant farms that used to dot the landscape. Danny Brownlow once again offered the use of his place to host the Georgia Region championships. President David Healan was the trial chairman, Shelley and Quinton Wiseman judges, BJ Carroll planted birds and Stan Perdue was the Field Marshall. It wasn’t long before we heard “Bring ‘em out!” and the trial was underway. Saturday was warm in the 60’s but dry and a high cloud cover kept thing from heating up too much. The fields were perfect, with broom sage, a lake, and some trees scattered over rolling hills. The dogs were all ready to go- these were the best in the region and they all wanted to win the final, big trial. At the end of the day, many fine dogs dropped by the wayside, unable to make the cut. Finally, the initial cut was over and first place went to Toby/ Donald Roberts, 2nd Mickey/Angie Healan, 3rd Skye/Ricky Gunnyon, 4th Dude/Corey Perdue.
We broke for the day to a meal catered by Longhorn Steakhouse in the clubhouse Danny Brownlow built for the purpose. After the blessing and the meal and a lot of fellowship, David Healan got down to business with the recognition awards for the year. Right up front, we recognized our members that have placed in the “big” National Trials. Paul Vaughn and PT (owned by Danny Brownlow) was 1st Runner Up at the DOY Trial this year. Jeffery Keck took 2nd Runner up with Trooper at the Quail Invitational in Lake Wales this year and Angela Healan took a 3rd Runner Up with Mickey at the Quail Forever/NSTRA Trial this year. (Nice belt buckle, Angela. Did David show you his belt buckle….oh, that’s right..he doesn’t have one!)
Our local awards were next with Rookie of the Year awarded to Roger Alexander, Sportsman of the Year going to Corey Perdue, Bird Planter of the Year to Zack Kirby, Most Improved Dog to Angela Healan and Mickey, High Point Female Dog to David Healan and Dixie (again), and Best Dog in Georgia- the High Point Dog of Georgia- to Jeffery Keck and Trooper, with 51 GA points and 54 National point. He is also the top dog in the Nation right now!
We didn’t break out a Judge of the Year Category this year but we honored all our judges as the best of the best- thank you all. The new officers are Danny Brownlow- President, Randy Schultz- Vice President, and Angela Healan- Secretary/Treasurer. Congratulations to all of you.
Sunday dawned cool but we were looking at highs in the low 70’s. Action was brisk from the start as the intensity stepped up a notch and handlers and dogs were really pumped up. At the second cut the remaining dogs were Deuce/Woody Jones, Bear/Cory Perdue, Trooper/Jeffery Keck, Snickers/Gene Pritchett, Mickey/Angela (Belt Buckle) Healan and Molly/Cory Perdue. The final six ran 3 more braces as the sun began to heat up. Handlers started getting nervous and there were more than a few chased down birds as the shots missed their mark. After the last 3 braces the final 2 dogs were chosen by score and they went head to head for a 1 hour brace with a double field and 10 birds. At the end of the day, with worn out bird dogs and panting handlers Gene Pritchett and Snickers (GSP/M) were at the top of the heap- the new Georgia Champions! First Runner Up was Mollie (P/F) and Cory Perdue, Second Runner UP was Bear (P/M) and Cory Perdue, followed by Trooper and Jeffery Keck, Mickey/Angela Healan and Deuce/Woody Jones. Congratulations to all of you- great dogs and super handlers!
Special thanks go out to our judges and field marshals and especially to Danny Brownlow, for the use of his wonderful trial grounds. There would be no trialing without unselfish, dedicated people like these. Thank You, again.
